By taking my balloon workshop, children will learn how to create balloon animals using simple shapes and techniques that emphasize fine motor skills and creativity.
Teaching kids to twist balloons helps them with manual dexterity, self esteem, and even gives some basic insight into structural engineering.
Creating balloon animals is not only fun for any age, but it is an educational activity. An activity I do with pre-school and kindergarten children is that I pump up a lot of balloons and then we count how many we have blown up that are the same shape. After we twist them, the shape is changed, but the count is the same. This reinforces the concept of numbers. Other great activities for this age group are color games with the balloons as well as story telling using the balloons as props.
Balloons are a safe, fun way for children to be successful at an artistic endeavor. If they can be successful at this, maybe they can try drawing, sculpting, or something else that’s creative. You may actually give a child the gift of a lifetime hobby or career just by teaching them how to make “three loop twists”.
Children will learn that anybody can make a balloon animal, making one themselves gives them a real sense of accomplishment. They will
develop a new appreciation for the skill which in turn gives them a sense of their own potential.
I bring pre-inflated balloons and teach the kids to make a simple “three loop dog”, plus I bring extra balloons so they can try their hand at hats and all sorts of simple figures that are very easy. This keeps the kids involved and they love the stuff they have made themselves.
If time allows, I have the children make free form sculptures and have them vote on the one they like best.
As an option, for an additional fee that can be added to the cost of the class, I can provide each child with 20 balloons and their very own pump and instructions to make a dog and a sword to take home with them. They can then practice twisting the balloons themselves. I let them know that they can purchase more balloons at party stores.
